  2. Navigate down to Pattern and select Generate Patterns. This feature is still in beta, so it may evolve over time.

Step 3: Enter Your Pattern Prompt

Next, you will need to enter your prompts in the new Generative Patterns panel.

  1. Type a simple word or phrase that describes the pattern you want to create. For example, you might type “ice cream”.
  2. Hit the Tab or Enter key on your keyboard and Illustrator will generate results based on your input. First, Illustrator will give you three options to choose from, if you are not happy with any of them, you can generate more by Clicking the Generate button.

Step 4: Adjust Color Variations

As the results load, you may want to adjust the color variations. To do so, click on the color palette icon and do the following:

  1. If you want to limit the complexity of the pattern, specify the total number of colors. For example, you can set it to two colors to keep it subtle.
  2. You can also check the Color Presets options drop-down menu and you will get a few options like Black and White, Muted colors, Warm colors, and so on…
  3. You can also pick specific colors by clicking the plus icon to add your colors.

Every time you adjust these options you need to hit Generate again! Illustrator will not change the settings automatically based on option selection. So do not forget to hit Generate.

Step 7: Adjusted Pattern Density

Illustrator also allows you to adjust the pattern density. To change the overall density, click the Gear icon to open the density controls.

  • Higher density means the pattern elements will be closer together, creating a denser, more packed pattern.
  • Lower density results in more space between the pattern elements, giving the design a more open, airy feel.

This option is especially useful when you’re working with complex or automated patterns and want to fine-tune the distribution of the pattern elements without manually adjusting each one. It gives you a more intuitive way to manage how the design scales or fills a given area.

Adjust to your liking and move to the next step!

  2. You can then adjust the pattern settings as needed.
